 Tips for construction workers

Construction workers assist with big tasks on building and construction sites and are involved in a wide range of manual laboring jobs. Their task can range from the unloading, carrying, stacking of building material, to using jack hammers, erecting and dismantling scaffolding, ramps, barricades and even operating construction machinery, not to mention working at great heights.

Thus for those newbie’s out there who are interested in construction work, they should know that construction work also requires some basic skills though it is not very tough to mater them. The main challenge for a someone that is new to this line of work is how to remain safe and secure at all times, make sure they are aware of the risks involved and also receive the appropriate safety training for constructions workers.

Here are a few statistics of the workplace fatality from 2012. As per the statistics that were made public in 2012 approximately 4000 workers were fatally injured at their workplace. This statistic is not meant to scare away any new constructions workers, but it is definitely a fact that you should be aware off. It is also important to note that the rules and regulations have become more strict now and the safety of the construction workers is given more importance.

Safety tips for construction workers:

  • The dangers that exist: As a construction worker you are entitled to be educated regarding the hazards at our workplace. The only way a construction workers safety can be ensured is if they are aware of all the potential hazards and risky situations. There is a general list of precautions that can be taken by each construction worker however each construction site is different and have their own list of hazards which you need to be aware off. Some of the common risks include exposure to chemicals, risks at high places, working with dangerous equipment, etc.
  • Few other common hazards: Once you enter the workplace a trained eye will immediately spot the obvious workplace hazards. Even if you are new to the construction field it is likely that you too will spot them. The obvious hazards include falling from heights, unguarded machinery, etc. However not all the hazards are apparent and immediately detectable and you often only spot them later on. Such hazards include repeated exposures to very high noise levels, even exposure to radiation, dust and chemicals.
  • The job safety training: In an ideal world an employer should always make sure that the construction worker possess all the necessary skills required to do the job in a safe and correct manner. In addition to which the employer should ideally also arrange an enrolment program which includes basic training and information about the more specific issues pertaining to the workplace. However there is every possibility that some employees don’t do that hence there are now occupational health and safety regulations that require an employer to make sure the worker possess the necessary skills. Additionally, the employer should also assign direct supervision for those employees with very little to no experience.
  • Safety for construction worker: Besides the supervision and some training provided by the company the inexperienced construction worker needs to be alert and follow safe practices as well. For example if you are unloading hazardous chemicals and the supervisor is called off for some reason, you should wait till he gets back and carry out the job only under his supervision. It may seem easy to finish the job at hand on your own but the supervisor has been assigned for a very good reason and boundaries should never be crossed. In general every task has a proper method and procedure which must be followed. For example if the task is to work with hazardous chemicals, it is necessary for you to have first undergone the Workplace Hazardous Material Information System training (WHMIS).
  • Safety meetings: Safety meetings are very beneficial and it also shows that the employer is committed towards the safety of the workers. That said, there are no rules or regulations that state that it is necessary to conduct safety meetings on a regular basis.
  • Safety gear: The importance of making use of safety gear cannot be stressed enough. It is vital that you always wear the necessary safety gear that is demanded by the task. For example, in general while working on a construction site it is usually compulsory to have strong head gear on in the form of a hard hat. The employer is legally required to provide the necessary safety equipment required for special tasks carried out on the construction site. In addition to that the employer is also entitled to train the worker on how to use the safety equipment. For example the employer is required to provide respiratory protective equipment if and when there is a breathing hazard. On the other hand the employer may not be required to provide the basic safety equipment like safety boots, hard hats, protective eyewear and ear wear and fire resistant clothing. These are a few things that the worker should have enough knowledge to always carry with him. Though it is the duty of the employer to enforce the rule for the workers to always be in their protective and safe attire.
  • Emergency procedures: Every employer is legally required to train their workers and provide the information on all the emergency procedures. There could be a number of different procedures for the many different tasks at hand. However in the case where the worker is in constant supervision of highly trained employee, exceptions are made.
  • In case of an accident: The first step to take in case of an incident at the workplace is to report it. The employer is legally required to maintain first aid supplies along with trained personnel on how to administer first aid. Hence the worker will most certainly receive immediate assistance via the first aid kit available for every situation. If the incident is more serious, it is necessary to consult a professional doctor at the earliest.
  • The health and safety responsibilities of a worker: Each worker is responsible for their own safety and the safety of their fellow workers. Thus as an worker you should never engage in a task that is likely to bring harm to either yourself or a fellow employee. The task should also be refused if the worker feels he has insufficient training.
  • Making health and safety inquires: A workplace such as a construction site will usually always have experience supervisors who have all the answers and safety information. Hence in case of any health and safety quires, the first person to contact would be your supervisor. But every worker should know that they have every right to contact the Workplace health and safety call centre who are just a call away at the toll free number 1-866-415-8690. At times in more serious situations an occupational health and safety official will be more than happy to pay you a visit at your workplace to ensure the safety of everyone involved is at highest level.
