A list of steps to take towards making a construction site safe

Steps to Take Towards Making a Construction Site Safe:

How to make Construction Site Safe

Maintaining a high level of Health and safety is necessary just above everywhere. But it is even more important at a workplace. There are some workplaces that are not very dangerous places to work, while there are those that are highly risky and also involve handling hazardous substances. For example the health and safety on a construction site is extremely important. Of the number of accidents that occur at workplaces every year many of them are fatal and the employees end up losing their lives. The higher percentage of such accidents occur at workplaces like a construction site or a mine.

As per the statistics release in 2012, approximately 4600 people lost their lives at their work places which is an alarmingly high number. Thus the health and safety at a construction site should never been taken lightly. In fact it is something that it should be taken into consideration while performing just about any task. The major causes of accidents at construction sites is either due to a fall, incidents relating to vehicles, collapsing material or coming in contact with overhead power lines. The good news that that most of the accidents can be avoided by taking the necessary precaution and educating all involved (that includes the employees and the employers alike). As Publilius Syus correctly said “One is not exposed to danger who, even when in safety is always on their guard.”
Construction safety training is very important. Thus here this is a list of steps that can be taken to make the construction site a safer place to work:

  • Perform a walk-through of the site: By going over the entire workplace environment and each and every working area it is possible to identify and assess any workplace hazard and even make a note of the potentially unsafe conditions. A general checklist to follow while performing walk-through includes matters like fire, accident proofing, toxins. The benefits of a walk-through are plenty since even a quick walk through will make fire related hazards apparent immediately. For example if you have a trained eye you will immediately spot combustible materials kept closely together that could be potentially disastrous. Even if you are not very experienced at this, you are bound spot similar issues. A few more examples of the benefits of a walk-through are listed below:
  1. Spotting slippery rugs or floors
  2. Making sure the lighting is good in all places.
  3. Making sure sharp objects are disposed in a correct manner.
  4. Making sure the toxic chemicals are sealed, placed as well as labelled correctly; with the necessary warning signs.
  • Identify and mark all hazardous material: It often happens that hazardous material is either not labelled or labelled in a wrong manner which in turns causes a bad accident. Thus not only is it necessary to make sure that all the hazardous material is marked and labelled correctly, it is also important to educate the operators regarding the safe method of handling the material. In fact some industries go as far as assigning the job of handling hazardous material only to a limited number of trained personnel.
  • Training the personnel: It is essential for all the personnel working at the construction site to be aware of the risks involved during their work. The best way to prevent accidents is to make sure that both the employees and employers are aware of the safety risks and take the appropriate measures to avoid any incident. At the same time each task needs to be carried out using the safe and established method as well as all equipment needs to be operated in the right manner to avoid accidents. Thus the training of the personnel in such matters is of high importance.
  • Inspect equipment prior to using: In general all the equipment used at the construction site should always be well maintained (and undergo regular maintenance) . Some of the modern equipment available now-a-days will always perform a self check when turned on and report any issues on a control panel that would be provided. However it is always a good idea to have trained personnel operating such equipment, since they are more likely to spot unusual noises and jerky moments in time to avoid any major disaster.
  • Be sure OSHA standards are met: The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) was created to help employers and employees reduce the injuries, illnesses and deaths caused while on the job. In order to ensure this they have set certain standards which they expect all relevant companies and institutes to follow.
  • Prepare for emergencies: All the personnel involved are prepared and trained to take all the possible precautions and undergo all the right training so that accidents can be avoided. But it remains a fact there is a large number of fatalities each year in the construction industry alone. There are yet more steps that can be taken to reduce this number. The way to do this is to establish a set of steps to take in case of emergencies of all natures. This can be an electrical, mechanical, or some other issue. Furthermore, the supervisor should conduct regular drills to ensure the preparedness of every personnel in case of an emergency.
