But this is also the truth that no family would want their earning member, who is so closed to their hearts works in an environment where the risk of any injury, or accident is unpredictable. All they can do is to keep some faith and expectations from the organization for who one of their family members is working.

To The Organization

Importance of Workplace Safety and Training

An organization has multiple divisions and departments. They all have different roles and responsibilities. There is one department named as, Health and Safety. They tell all the employees and organization too, the importance of Workplace Safety in the Workplace.

Informing the risk in detail by writing long tail warnings, a simple sign makes sense. The best part is that all over the world these safety and risk signs are same. If you are travelling to other country related to office work, you will find the same signs there. They are standardized. Red indicates immediate danger. Green or amber color tells that precautions should be made in prior anything serious happens. Blue is something similar to Blue which means, do not wait and take immediate action. A good safety sign program will lead towards first aid room or somewhere safe. However, the signs are just a reminder, a worker must understand the importance of safety training in the workplace.

Safety Training Importance

Training programs are to ensure your employees and you both are safe and healthy during the working hours. Positive attitude brings productivity and thus less distractions occur. Health and Safety Awareness – Risk Assessment

Health and Safety Awareness Training for Workers:Health and Safety Awareness Training for Workers

Health and Safety is an issue that every organization needs to deal with. Neglecting the safety at workplace can result in fatal injuries and spell doom for all concerned. Although the safety standards are now higher, with more number of people and organizations following the procedure, still accidents do occur as show by these statistics:

The number of fatalities at work place in 2014 were 4056.

More recently more than 250 multinational workers were killed in a mine at Turkey in May 2014. The initial cause at the time was found to be neglected safety review.

Rick assessment is an important part of health and safety and helps build the foundation towards a better and safer workplace.

What is Risk Assessment?

Risk Assessment should ideally be the start of an health and safety program Ontario. The tasks usually involve:

  • Seek and identify and hazards.
  • Analyze the level or risk the hazard posses
  • Eliminate or find a work around for the hazard.

For example in a construction company the risk assessment can bring to light potential danger of heavy objects falling on people. Or in a lab while using a laboratory instrument, assess the risk of using bio hazard substance in case of leek or malfunction of device.

The importance of Risk Assessment:

In just about any health and safety process, risk assessment plays an important role for the initial assessment of the situation. Here is why risk assessment is so important:

  • Make all concerned aware of the risks and hazards at work place.
  • Vital in identifying who are the people at risk ( which group of employees or management)
  • Helps identify the steps necessary to eliminate the risk and even gauge if current control measures are up to standard.
  • Helps prioritize all hazards and take appropriate control measures.

How is Risk Assessment done:

The task of performing the risk assessment is most suitable to a person who has an eye to spot all the hazard. Someone with a good knowledge of the domain, for example for a construction company it would be vital to have a risk assessor who knows about the construction business. At the same time for the risk assessment of a medical laboratory it would be advisable to have a person who knows his way around chemicals and instruments doing the risk assessment.

The methods of risk assessment involves identifying the hazards and also assessing the level of threat they possess. Besides which it is also necessary to monitor the hazard for increase in level of threat or change of threat. In most cases a system should also be in place to eliminate all the threats by taking the suggested action.

Health and Safety Training Overview

Workplace Safety Rules With Health and Safety Training:

Workplace safety rules and standards exits for the benefit of all concerned, the employees and the employers. In general it is necessary for the employer to educate the employee regarding the hazards involved at the workplace and all the necessary precautions and safe guards that a necessary to be taken. That said there as a few occupations that have a high risk of accidents occurring, eg. construction work, mining, etc and those with low risk. However safety needs to be maintained at all type of workplaces. Here are few workplace safety statistics to prove the point.

  • Approximately 4600 workers were killed at the workplace in 2012.
  • In 2014 more than 250 workers were killed in a mining incident in Turkey. This was mainly due to negligence by the management and involved workers from all around the world including Turkey.

All about the Joint Health and Safety Committee

Several people are unaware of what is the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). However on a closer look the name itself reflects its composition. At times it is also known as the Joint Work Site Health and Safety Committee or the Occupational Health Committee, or the Workplace Safety and Health Committee or even the Health and Safety Committee.

It is essentially a forum for bringing the internal responsibility system into practice. The labour and management representatives make up the committee and meet regularly to deal with the health and safety issues at hand. This is highly beneficial to all involved. Imagine having several and relevant perspectives on the topic of health and safety and at the same time benefiting from the enhanced cooperation among all parts of work force. To be more specific, it includes people with practical knowledge as well as those with information on the policies and procedures.

Establishing the Joint Health and Safety Committee:

The responsibility of establishing the Joint Health and Safety Committee lays in the hands of the Employer themselves. The guidelines for organizing a committee are usually set via the Canadian Health and Safety legislations. The guidelines include some of the issues mentioned below:

  • Structure of the committee
  • Meeting Frequency
  • Role and Responsibilities of the Committee members.

Thus the employers need to prepare the terms of reference applicable to the formation, structure and functioning. However they need to keep in mind the issues of compliance with the OHC legislation, the effectiveness of the committee in meeting workplace specific needs and encourages a wide employee involvement.

Opting for a committee or a representative – Is it the law?

A Joint Health and Safety committee (JHSC) may be possible in a large firm but there are many small companies around where the number of employees is very low. Hence at such places it is not practical to organise a (JHSC) committee of any kind. Thus the alternative is to arrange for a health and safety representative.

However in general it is mandatory for the employer to establish the Joint Health and Safety Committee or to appoint a representative for the same. However it can also be subject to the ministerial decision. This effective for the entire Canadian Jurisdiction.

It is likely that your workplace is exempt from this requirement and hence it is a good idea to consult the most up to date and applicable legislation. The exemption usually depend on factors like the size of the work force, the industry and accident record, or a combination of the lot.

Sources for the legislation:

The guidelines for the Joint Health and Safety Committee in the various jurisdictions of Canada are mentioned below:

Canada:

Canada Labor Code, Part II (R.S.C. 1985, C. L-2), Sections 135 to 137

British Columbia:

In the same way “Safety First Consulting” is a health and safety consulting place for all your requirements pertaining to heath safety. What is Occupational Health And Safety?

Occupational Health and Safety:

Occupational Health and Safety:

The term ‘Occupational health and safety’ suggest that it is something to do with the safety aspect and well-being while at work. That I correct. However how many people are actually aware of the significance of the term and the true meaning of what is occupational health and safety?

What I am driving at here is that there are many workers who join a workforce immediately after graduation, some not even that; some may be high school dropout as well and others looking for a change of job. Either way, all these people would have had no real reason to be concerned with the safety at work. It is surprising though true that many workers are not aware how risky it actually is.

These statistics tell a grim story:

  • The Year 2012: Number of fatalities were 4620 while at workplace. That a very big figure in spite of having all the precautions.
  • May 2014: Number of fatalities were more than 250. This was in a mine in Turkey and involved workers from all around the world.

I can go on and on; but I have mentioned only a couple of recent statistics to keep it relevant.

Occupational health and safety (OH&S) program:

The main aim of the Occupational health and safety program is the much needed prevention of workplace incidents. If you are in the Canadian Jurisdiction and you are a business then it is mandatory to have some form of the program. Besides which the components of the program also dictated by Health and Safety Legislation.

Not every organization is the same and hence the same rules and regulations do not apply to all the organizations. This is more of a comprehensive guidelines for all the organizations to follow out of which only few may be applicable to you depending in the size of your organization. In fact in a small organization the level or the program is likely to be a scaled down version of what may be implemented in a medium to large scale organization.

The Policy Statement:

The Occupational Health and Safety policy of an organization are more of a guideline for action. It gives an overview of the extent to which every unexpected situation is covered. However in general if should have the following points:

  • Showcase their commitment to protect the health and safety of the employees.
  • State the main objectives clearly.
  • The basic health and safety philosophy of the organization.
  • Defining the structure of the occupational health and safety program and also naming the person accountable.
  • A general list of responsibilities of the employees.

This is an important document or statement hence the policy needs to be stated in unambiguous and clear terms. Furthermore it should always be updated with the latest modifications. This is one document that should be easily available and even provided to each employee.

The Program Elements:

The specific of the program are highly dependent on the nature of the organization as already mentioned, however there are some things that are recommended for every organization and they are listed here:

  • Employee Orientation
  • Training
  • Individual Responsibility
  • Medical and First Aid
  • Health and Safety Rules
  • Health and Safety Promotion
  • Workplace specific items
  • Correct Work Procedures
  • Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee

The Individual Responsibilities

It is correct to assume that the management is responsible for the issues of health and safety in an organization and they are also accountable. However in medium to large organization or even the small ones for that matter it is the employees who are carrying out the major tasks, handling dangerous material and working with machines. Hence at the end the day if the employee as an individual does not understand his responsibilities towards his own safety and the safety of his colleges the whole purpose is defeated.

Hence it is vital that each employee be made aware of their responsibilities in general. They need to be aware of who the correct authority is and who is in the best position to make the important decisions. Besides which they should be aware of what is expected of them, know their responsibilities, have the correct set of skills and be sufficiently trained and certified as the position demands.

Sample list of responsibilities for a worker:

  • Making use of the personal protection and safety equipment that is recommended by the employer for each task.
  • Following the guidelines for each procedure to remain safe.
  • Be aware of all the regulations and implement them in every situation.
  • Remaining alert to be able to report an injury or illness as soon as it is spotted.
  • Report any unsafe practice when observed.
  • Be actively involved in the joint health and safety committee.

Sample list of responsibilities for the First Line Supervisor:

  • Instructing and reminding the workers of the safe work practices.
  • Actively enforce the health and safety regulations.
  • Remain alert to spot any wrong doings and immediately correcting any unsafe activity.
  • Making sure the workers are performing the tasks assigned to them and only the authorized workers are doing the job.
  • Making it a point to report any incident that takes place in the workplace no matter how small it may be.
  • Perform routine inspections of the work place and eliminating any potentially hazardous elements.
  • Actively promoting the importance of safety to the workers.

Workplace Safety – The fact that you need to know

Workplace Safety – The fact :

Workplace Safety

Here are some gruesome true facts to hammer in the point. The statistics made public show that in 2012 approximately 4628 workers met with fatal accidents while at their workplace. A more recent true story is about the mining disaster that occurred in May 2014 in Turkey. This is an incident in which more than 250 miners from many different countries around the world including Turkey lost their lives. The sad truth about this incident is that a review of the safety of the miners was initiated approximately 3 – 4 months prior to the incident but it did not take place since it was deemed unnecessary by the authorities. There no more fitting quote than is for something like this – “We must respect the past, and mistrust the present, if we wish to provide for the safety of the future.”

A workplace is not a place where you go to feel safe and sound, it is simply a workplace. Moreover depending on the nature of the work there are varying degrees of risks involved while on the job. I do not mean to scare you or make you feel uncomfortable at your workplace. But it is vital to treat a workplace like a workplace, and stay alert for potential disasters. This applied to all the workplaces and is more obvious is some than it is in the others. For example the mining industry as well as the construction industry tend to have a high fatally rate due to incidents occurring while at work. The other workplaces not as much. But the sad part is disasters don’t come with a warning bell hence the best chance of surviving a disaster is to always stay alert and follow safe practices.

Workplace Safety:

There are many laws in place that are meant to enforce workplace safety. In fact workplace health and safety is an issue that should be foremost in the minds of the employers. To ensure this there have been several measures taken by several governing bodies. There are also support centres in place that assist the workplace to become as safe and secure as possible. Although in the event of a incident such bodies support the quick employee recovery as well as cover the employer from being sued by the employee.

But at the end of the day who knows the workplace better than the very people who work there. Thus the Canada Labour Code let the employees and the employers play a major role in identifying and resolving their respective health and safety concerns. This has been designed in a hope to help the employers and employees be more self reliant and alert in dealing with workplace safety topics.

Being prepared for the worst as an Employee:

Workplace health and safety is an important issue for the employer but that is not where it starts. It is important that as an employee that you make sure you take all the necessary percussions towards ensuring you prevent any work related injuries. The safety of oneself and other colleagues should be high on list of priorities. Besides which it is necessary that you be aware of a few facts mentioned below:

  • You have the right to refuse the work if it seems dangerous.
  • You can also intervene in the safety issues related to your colleagues.
  • In the case where an employee is pregnant or nursing, you are entitled to some special considerations.
  • You not only have a right to inquire about the Labour program’s handling of health and safety complaints but you should even make sure to you do.

Employee’s right to know:

Workplace safety training is an important factor to making sure there are no incidents at the workplace. Hence the employer is entitled to arrange for a general session for their employees that involves matters of health and safety training. There are many companies that incorporate health and safety training in their employee initiating procedure. There are also other companies that regularly organize such sessions to ensure the safety of their employees. In either case, it is important for you as an employee to be aware of the necessity of some form of work place safety training, that provides you with the workplace safety tips. Employees with special needs in case of disabilities are also catered for.

Besides this you as an employee can also access the official employee reports related to health and safety and considering the workplace safety facts, it is a good idea to do so.

Employee’s right to participate:

The health and safety representatives have a right to participate in identifying and correcting any work related health and safety concern as do the health and safety committee or policy health and safety committee members. In fact in larger companies where the strength of the employees is close to 300 and more, the employers are required to put in place an policy health and safety committee. This is committee is intended to handle organization wide issues. The employees also have a right to participate in the resolution process of any internal complaints.

Employee’s right to refuse:

Just because you are an employee doesn’t mean you have to do everything that is thrown at you. You have every right to refuse the work if you have reason to believe that it is dangerous. There are several situations where this is applicable as listed below:

  • The workplace is clearly too dangerous to work in.
  • The machine or instrument can potentially cause harm to yourself or a fellow employee.
  • The task that has been assigned can cause harm to yourself or other fellow employees.

Your duties as an employee:

Workplace safety rules are often exist in many workplaces to ensure the safety of the employees and make sure that the supervisors have an organized set of employees to manage and ensure safety. In spite of that there are several duties of an employee as listed here:

  • The employee must at all times use safety materials, equipment, devices and clothing that has been provide by the employer and is intended to keep the employee safe.
  • It is likely that several procedures are in place at the workplace to insure the safety of all. It is necessary that as an employee you follow these procedures.
  • Any instructions explicitly give by the employer concerning the health and safety of all involved should always be followed.
  • It is also necessary to co-operate with other employees who are carrying out their duties by adhering to the health and safety rules.
  • In the case where the task or environment gets too risky or hazardous to work in, it is necessary to report it to the employer.
  • All the workplace incidents, or occupational diseases or hazardous occurrences should always be reported even if they are about other fellow employees.

The responsibilities of the Employer:

The employer is a place where he has both the knowledge and the means to take all the preventive measure necessary to avoid any workplace accidents and injuries. In addition to which the employers are also legally obligated to do so. Employers often arrange workplace safety groups where the necessary information and training is provided to ensure the employees can perform their jobs safely. But that is not all, the employers also need to make sure the managers, supervisors and the health and safety committees and representatives perform their jobs safely. Besides which the obligations of the employer also extend to the investigation, inspections, accident reporting and hazard prevention program.

The employer’s duties to provide information, training and supervision:

The employer has several duties towards the employees. They need to ensure that the employees have the necessary information, training and supervision to perform their duties. The employers need to make sure of the following:

  • The employees have an understanding of the overall work safety procedure.
  • The employees have all the required knowledge and training to use the workplace tools and equipment.
  • The employees are aware of all the potential things that can go wrong as well as all the potentially dangerous conditions. In addition to which they should also know what to do when things go wrong.
  • The training sessions provided should also include documentation.

It is not enough that the employees take all the necessary precaution. The managers and the supervisors also need to understand their duties and be aware of the necessary hazards to be able to guide the other employees. The employers must also ensure that the health and safety committees or representatives are aware of their duties as mentioned here:

  • Maintain regular meetings to review the safety.
  • Arrange regular inspections to insure the safety.
  • Active participation in accident investigations and hazard analysis.

Employer Investigation:

It is little known that the employer is also legally required (by The Canada Labour Code) to initiate investigation in several situations as mentioned here:

  • Any employee complaints.
  • Any employee refusals to work
  • Any employee accidents or injuries.

Inspections:

Employers do the training and make their employees aware of the risks involved and potential dangers at the workplace. But that is not enough. Regular inspections are key to ensuring the potential occupational health and safety hazards are spotted before they become a cause of any big incident. In fact it is legally required to carry out regular inspections by the health and safety committee.

It is important to make note of the fact that in case when any hazard is identified, the health and safety committee is not authorized to take any actions. They are required to report it to the employer. However the employer is entitled to provide a written response regarding the discovery of the hazard to the committee within 30 days which should mention how the issue will be resolved.

The investigation and reporting of accidents at workplace:

When it comes to investigating and reporting accidents, it is necessary to be thorough. Doing so helps all involved to take preventive measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Thus by reporting every such small incident you are not only making your company a safer workplace but also providing important information regarding potential disasters for others and saving many lives.

It is in fact legally required by the employee to submit a written investigation report for any employee with temporary or permanent disabling injuries within 14 days of it occurring.

Besides which there are also two annual reports to be submitted by the employers like, Employee Annual Hazardous Occurrence report and work place committee report.

Health and Safety Training

Health and Safety TrainingEvery company is required to maintain a certain standard for the health and safety of the employees and this is meant purely for the benefit of all concerned. However the way it stands now, the employer is legally required to educate all their employees in matters pertaining to the health and safety risks involved at the work place. What the occupation is, is not important. It is very important that the health and safety training be aimed at promoting as well as maintaining the highest degree of physical, mental and social well being of the workers.

Though there are several occupations that are have more risk involved than the others. For example working at a construction site or a mine is a very risky job as compared to the professions. In fact the statistics published showed that approximately 4628 workers were killed while on the job in 2012. A more recent example is what happened in a mine in Turkey, where more than 250 workers lost their lives. This happen to include workers from Turkey as well as other parts of the world. Thus this just proves why health and safety training is important.

Effective Training:

Effective Training

We have so far established that the training of the employees on matters of health and safety within the company is of great importance. But in addition to that you also need to make sure that the training being provided is really effective. The outcome of effective training sessions will be very quite apparent, some of the salient outcomes are listed here:

  • The training program will help the employees become more competent in matters of health and safety.
  • Will help in boosting your business and avoid the distress caused in the case of accidents of ill health.
  • It will help you in avoiding the financial costs incurred in case of occupational accidents and ill health.

Though most companies do have a good insurance plan to cover them in case the unforeseen does occur, these insurance plans will not cover all the losses. For example it won’t cover for damaged products or lost production and it certainly cannot compensate for the demotivated staff.

What is health and safety training?

As far as occupational health and safety training is concerned, it is not just the matter of attending a few training sessions and walking away with certificate that says you are now certified to work a certain workplace (like construction site). The aim of these training sessions is to make sure all the employees including the new recruits understand the hazards present at their respective workplaces.

The training ideally includes information on all the possible things that can go wrong and want to do to prevent such incidents from happening. Besides which it may also include instructions on how to carry out the job in a safe and secure manner. For example it can include the safe method of operating a Crane. As the saying goes “It is better to be safe than sorry”.

Company Culture:

It is very important to maintain a good and healthy atmosphere. This is something that applies to all the workplaces, be it a large industry, a construction site or a small office. It is ideally the responsibility of the employers and supervisors to create an environment that promotes the message of working safely, taking every precaution possible and maintain a positive attitude. In addition to this it is also important that a new employee be made feel the presence of this safe working environment. This is especially essential in workplaces like construction sites and mines.

Safety Training Includes Studying Incidents:

Safety Training is important for all workplaces. But it is also important to learn from incidents that occur in the company. By doing so you can take preventive steps to make sure they don’t occur again. Besides this it is also beneficial to study incidents that have taken place in similar workplaces. The saying “Precaution is better than cure” is a 100% true. And it is by designing a comprehensive training session that also includes real incident cases that have occurred in similar workplaces that it is possible to achieve this.

Safety Training Fits a Dynamic Organization:

It is likely that the workplace changes for the current employees in the form of either new equipment or new building (office) workplace. Or it may even be the case where the tasks of an employee change and he is now responsible for something completely new and different from what he was doing. In such cases it is important that the employee or employees are given more training in addition to the initial training prior to the change. Thus it is necessary to be aware of the fact that the health and safety training requirements in the workplace can change dynamically and the organization should be prepared for that.

Safety Training Responds to Identified Risks:

The safety training that is provided by the company is usually quite comprehensive. At times even the professional safety consultants are called it to make sure the training is coming from experience individuals who specialize is such matters. In spite of this it is the responsibility of the supervisors and employers to maintain constant communication with the workers and detect the need for further training or precautionary measures. Furthermore the workplace can also be made safer by the supervisors if they stay alert and focused on the job at hand.

Conclusion:

Safety First

Occupational health and safety may now be something that a great many are aware about. However it is very important that it is comprehensive an covers all aspects of the work environment. At times such tasks are best left to the professionals who not only have the knowledge and experience is such matters but they also have an eye to detect a potentially risky situation.
