Internal Safety Consultants With Skills They Should Posses

Tips for Improved Internal Safety Consulting: Internal Safety Consulting

The job of an Internal Safety consultant is never easy. This is the person a business turns to when it requires to ensure the safety of the workplace and their employees. It is fine while things go right however if things go wrong the blame-game starts and the safety consultant is often scrutinized. In general the process of a safety consultant is to access the workplace and detect all the potential hazards and at the same time make sure the employees and employers are well aware of the risks involved in all the tasks. Besides which there are several safe practices that can be followed and if done so can greatly lessen the risk of injury at workplace.

There are a great many Safety consulting companies that offer safety consulting services around the globe. But Safety Consulting cannot be generalized and each situation is different. Hence it takes an trained eye and plenty of experience to get it right.

Tips for better internal Safety Consulting:

  • A safety consultant may have deep knowledge of one industry and at the same time may not be very familiar with another industry. Hence it is usually a good idea for the consultant to concentrate his efforts on helping firms of the industry he is familiar with. This is beneficial for all involved since it makes sure the firm receives the best possible guidance.
  • A good safety consultant is the one who asks a lot of questions. The firm will have a completely different perspective of things and will rarely be able to volunteer all the necessary information. Hence by asking the right questions the Safety Consultant can retrieve all the important information.
  • Staying in focus is the key factor for a safety consultant. It pays to have the best certification and qualifications for the job along with some experience. However it is essential to remained focused on the tasks and to understand them and interpret them correctly.
  • Being able to communicate effectively is very important. From important discussions conducted with the management to make sure the employees get the clear picture of the hazards involved; all require good communications skills. Because at the end of the day if the employees do not understand a thing during their training sessions regarding the work place hazards the entire purpose is defeated.
  • The bigger picture is what helps to obtain more insight into the work place and hence prevent any accidents and injuries from occurring. What is Health and safety?

Workplace health and safety:

Workplace health and safety

Workplace health and safety is a very important issue and should not be taken lightly. These procedures are necessary for the well-being of every one (both the employees and the employers). As per the Occupational Safety and Health Administration each year many workers (employees) succumb to their injuries caused due to workplace accidents. The statistics gathered in 2012 showed us that close to 4628 workers met with fatal accidents at workplace in that year.

This is a very big figure and thus it is foolish to live under the false pretence that you are invincible and that nothing can happen to you at your work place. It is true that some workplaces are more risky than others, however it is necessary to take the proper precautions at all times no matter where you work. For example construction sites and mines are usually more prone to having workplace related accidents than any other workplace. In fact a very recent incident that took place in a mine in Turkey (in the month of May 2014) claimed the lives of more than 250 people. These were miners from all around the globe.

Health and Safety Hazards:

There is always the risk of employees being exposed to hazardous substances at the workplace (where such substances are used). In addition there are also several circumstances in which workplaces pose as major hazards to their employees. For example for employees working at places like constructions site there is always the danger of either some heavy material falling on the workers or machinery related injuries. Similarly working in mines is hazardous too.

These are just two simple examples but in the real world there are health and safety hazards in just about every profession in the form of infectious diseases or fatal injuries. There is rarely ever something like a 100% safe workplace. Thus it is the duty of the employer to make sure he identifies all the potential hazardous situations and materials and takes appropriate measure to safe guard his employees.

Health and Safety Enforcement:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has the task of enforcing the strict laws pertaining to health and safety. It is their duty to make sure any violations of Workplace health and safety are corrected and properly dealt with. In general the government has several responsibilities some of which are mentioned here:

  • The enforcement of occupational health and safety rules and legislation.
  • Inspection of workplaces.
  • Ensure correct flow of information.
  • Promote the relevant training, education and research.

Health Guidelines for health and safety:

Like just about any other legislation or standard there are guidelines for the health and safety requirements too. These guidelines are meant for companies who are seeking information on how to develop their health and safety policies. Furthermore these guidelines are also aimed at helping workers better understand the importance of being prepared in event of a incident occurring at their workplace. It helps the workers understand how to react in emergency situations. The guidelines are truly comprehensive and even include information for the companies that work with dangerous chemicals and hazardous substances.

Employee Awareness At Workplace:

There are health and safety guidelines and then there are organizations that enforce the health and safety policies but unless the employees themselves realize what effect their small carelessness or failure to behave and work properly can have on their future and the future of the company they may not take such matters seriously. Thus it is vital that the employees understand the risks and potential outcomes of their actions. As the famous saying goes “The key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire not things we fear”. It is the duty of the companies to make sure they prevent accidents by making sure the employees are fully aware of the dangers and hazards of the respective workplaces and not by hiding or blind sighting them.

Health and Safety Programs:

Health and Safety Programs help form the foundation to help the employees and employers alike for the necessary precautions that should taken and the dangers that lurk at every corner. Such programs make sure that the employers have all the information they need in order to be able to provide a safe and sound working environment for their employees. It also works for the employees by educating them on the benefit of proper workplace behaviour and practices. The programs try to hammer in the message that injuries and illness impact the companies and their employees in bad way and following systematic and proven procedures is the best way forward.

The cost of Safety failure:

In general the reason for an workplace incident is usually not enough preventive measure being taken, since it is safety first. Safety does not come after the accident has occurred. The workplace safety statistics paint a very murky picture; as per which in the year 2010/11 approximately 26.4 million working days were lost due to work related incidents. It would be naive to believe that this applies only to large industries because the small industries are equally at risk if not more.

System in place to manage Health & Safety:

There is a system in place that will come to the aid of the employees (and employers) in case of a workplace incident. But in an ideal world it should never come to that. In order to make sure that such kind of help and support is not required; and no incident occurs it is necessary for every company or industry to have a proper system in place. This system can be in the form of a health and safety policy which should ideally be on paper and if the resources do exist, even designate people to enforce the system.

Benefits of a good Health and Safety policy:

If you do have a good health and safety policy it can only mean one thing and that is that you have taken the first step towards safe guarding your employees. Having such a policy that is followed by all concerned has many benefits some of which are listed here:

  • Lesser requests for sick leave.
  • Lesser stress.
  • Better ability to cope with change.
  • An overall improvement in the morale.
  • An increase in productivity.
  • Greater job satisfaction.
  • Increase in the retention.
  • Fewer workplace incidents.
  • An overall improvement in the company image and culture.

Health and Safety Awareness – Risk Assessment

Health and Safety Awareness Training for Workers:Health and Safety Awareness Training for Workers

Health and Safety is an issue that every organization needs to deal with. Neglecting the safety at workplace can result in fatal injuries and spell doom for all concerned. Although the safety standards are now higher, with more number of people and organizations following the procedure, still accidents do occur as show by these statistics:

The number of fatalities at work place in 2014 were 4056.

More recently more than 250 multinational workers were killed in a mine at Turkey in May 2014. The initial cause at the time was found to be neglected safety review.

Rick assessment is an important part of health and safety and helps build the foundation towards a better and safer workplace.

What is Risk Assessment?

Risk Assessment should ideally be the start of an health and safety program Ontario. The tasks usually involve:

  • Seek and identify and hazards.
  • Analyze the level or risk the hazard posses
  • Eliminate or find a work around for the hazard.

For example in a construction company the risk assessment can bring to light potential danger of heavy objects falling on people. Or in a lab while using a laboratory instrument, assess the risk of using bio hazard substance in case of leek or malfunction of device.

The importance of Risk Assessment:

In just about any health and safety process, risk assessment plays an important role for the initial assessment of the situation. Here is why risk assessment is so important:

  • Make all concerned aware of the risks and hazards at work place.
  • Vital in identifying who are the people at risk ( which group of employees or management)
  • Helps identify the steps necessary to eliminate the risk and even gauge if current control measures are up to standard.
  • Helps prioritize all hazards and take appropriate control measures.

How is Risk Assessment done:

The task of performing the risk assessment is most suitable to a person who has an eye to spot all the hazard. Someone with a good knowledge of the domain, for example for a construction company it would be vital to have a risk assessor who knows about the construction business. At the same time for the risk assessment of a medical laboratory it would be advisable to have a person who knows his way around chemicals and instruments doing the risk assessment.

The methods of risk assessment involves identifying the hazards and also assessing the level of threat they possess. Besides which it is also necessary to monitor the hazard for increase in level of threat or change of threat. In most cases a system should also be in place to eliminate all the threats by taking the suggested action.

Thing that Safety Professionals don’t do

Things Safety Professionals don’t do

This is no conventional list and there are not many of these around either. There are several articles around on what Canadian registered Safety Professionals ought to do, or the safe practices they should follow. This is a list with a difference. This is list of the things that Safety Professionals should not do:

Act like a Cop: Many safety consulting companies safety professionals misuse their authority and begin to act more like a cop and less like a safety professional. A Safety professional needs to be kind, understanding, patient and furthermore be able to provide detailed explanations or give advice here required. They should never be stern or assertive. It does happen many times that a retired Police officer turns into a Safety Professional to utilize his expertise to help out. In any case it is important to remember the extent to which you should be assertive as it can often be mistaken

Head to Common Sense: There is a time to follow the books and perform all the checks and implement precautions the right way. However the right way is not always the method with which you will get the desired result. Some situations demand you make us of your common sense.

Putting the worker on the spot: All the precautions to take and safety procedure to be carried out should be explained to the team on the whole. Under no circumstances should a single worker be made to feel responsible for the entire situation.

Act like you know it all: While on sight on the client premises it is very easy to get carried away. Especially all eyes are on you and all the workers would be quite attentive to what you are advising them. At such a point of time if you come across a section of which you do not have much knowledge about then it is advisable that you seek help yourself. The main and only factor to consider is the safety of the employees and not your performance. Each workplace is different and it is highly likely that you may come across a situation that requires some more professional help

Spread rumours: The job of the safety professional is quite straight forward and usually doesn’t involve mingling with the employees. The inspection of a workplace is usually carried out by the Safety Professional on his own. However when it comes to giving instructions and making the employees aware of the perils at the workplace it is usually done in a large group along with the employees. Not all employees have the same level of understanding and hence it is necessary to be patient and explain the situation in more detail and provide more examples. There is no need to go spilling the beans later on any of the employees who needed the extra explanation. Spreading rumours or jokes about an employee should be strictly avoided.

Blindly follow the statistics: There are many statistics published regarding work places in general. As per the statistics the situation is quite bad in the construction industry. The number of people that fall prey to back disorders is on the rise as per the statistics published. However while inspecting a work place it is a good idea to provide the complete safety advice and not be influenced by pure statistics. By focusing on correct methods and procedures for tackling all the tasks you are providing the worker with complete knowledge of the safety issues instead of simply concentrating on those as per the statistics.

Be influenced and cave under the pressure from the business unit: An inspection of a premises is usually carried out on the terms of the employer. It is likely that the employer may be unaware of several hazardous situations and at the same time it is also possible the employer is trying to cover up something in order to save costs. In situations like these it is important for the Safety Professional to stay focused at the job at hand concentrate on collecting information on all the hazardous situations at the workplace.

Allow yourself to get distracted: It requires a trained eye to find trouble a mile away. The task of inspecting a premises is a very important one and with the trailed eye of a safety professional it makes things easier. It is one thing to be a certified health and safety consultant and completely other thing to implement good practice at all times. However it is essential for the safety professional to remain focused and not allow himself to be distracted via petty things.

A list of steps to take towards making a construction site safe

Steps to Take Towards Making a Construction Site Safe:

How to make Construction Site Safe

Maintaining a high level of Health and safety is necessary just above everywhere. But it is even more important at a workplace. There are some workplaces that are not very dangerous places to work, while there are those that are highly risky and also involve handling hazardous substances. For example the health and safety on a construction site is extremely important. Of the number of accidents that occur at workplaces every year many of them are fatal and the employees end up losing their lives. The higher percentage of such accidents occur at workplaces like a construction site or a mine.

As per the statistics release in 2012, approximately 4600 people lost their lives at their work places which is an alarmingly high number. Thus the health and safety at a construction site should never been taken lightly. In fact it is something that it should be taken into consideration while performing just about any task. The major causes of accidents at construction sites is either due to a fall, incidents relating to vehicles, collapsing material or coming in contact with overhead power lines. The good news that that most of the accidents can be avoided by taking the necessary precaution and educating all involved (that includes the employees and the employers alike). As Publilius Syus correctly said “One is not exposed to danger who, even when in safety is always on their guard.”
Construction safety training is very important. Thus here this is a list of steps that can be taken to make the construction site a safer place to work:

  • Perform a walk-through of the site: By going over the entire workplace environment and each and every working area it is possible to identify and assess any workplace hazard and even make a note of the potentially unsafe conditions. A general checklist to follow while performing walk-through includes matters like fire, accident proofing, toxins. The benefits of a walk-through are plenty since even a quick walk through will make fire related hazards apparent immediately. For example if you have a trained eye you will immediately spot combustible materials kept closely together that could be potentially disastrous. Even if you are not very experienced at this, you are bound spot similar issues. A few more examples of the benefits of a walk-through are listed below:
  1. Spotting slippery rugs or floors
  2. Making sure the lighting is good in all places.
  3. Making sure sharp objects are disposed in a correct manner.
  4. Making sure the toxic chemicals are sealed, placed as well as labelled correctly; with the necessary warning signs.
  • Identify and mark all hazardous material: It often happens that hazardous material is either not labelled or labelled in a wrong manner which in turns causes a bad accident. Thus not only is it necessary to make sure that all the hazardous material is marked and labelled correctly, it is also important to educate the operators regarding the safe method of handling the material. In fact some industries go as far as assigning the job of handling hazardous material only to a limited number of trained personnel.
  • Training the personnel: It is essential for all the personnel working at the construction site to be aware of the risks involved during their work. The best way to prevent accidents is to make sure that both the employees and employers are aware of the safety risks and take the appropriate measures to avoid any incident. At the same time each task needs to be carried out using the safe and established method as well as all equipment needs to be operated in the right manner to avoid accidents. Thus the training of the personnel in such matters is of high importance.
  • Inspect equipment prior to using: In general all the equipment used at the construction site should always be well maintained (and undergo regular maintenance) . Some of the modern equipment available now-a-days will always perform a self check when turned on and report any issues on a control panel that would be provided. However it is always a good idea to have trained personnel operating such equipment, since they are more likely to spot unusual noises and jerky moments in time to avoid any major disaster.
  • Be sure OSHA standards are met: The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) was created to help employers and employees reduce the injuries, illnesses and deaths caused while on the job. In order to ensure this they have set certain standards which they expect all relevant companies and institutes to follow.
  • Prepare for emergencies: All the personnel involved are prepared and trained to take all the possible precautions and undergo all the right training so that accidents can be avoided. But it remains a fact there is a large number of fatalities each year in the construction industry alone. There are yet more steps that can be taken to reduce this number. The way to do this is to establish a set of steps to take in case of emergencies of all natures. This can be an electrical, mechanical, or some other issue. Furthermore, the supervisor should conduct regular drills to ensure the preparedness of every personnel in case of an emergency.

The top 10 tips for construction workers

 Tips for construction workers:

 Tips for construction workers

Construction workers assist with big tasks on building and construction sites and are involved in a wide range of manual laboring jobs. Their task can range from the unloading, carrying, stacking of building material, to using jack hammers, erecting and dismantling scaffolding, ramps, barricades and even operating construction machinery, not to mention working at great heights.

Thus for those newbie’s out there who are interested in construction work, they should know that construction work also requires some basic skills though it is not very tough to mater them. The main challenge for a someone that is new to this line of work is how to remain safe and secure at all times, make sure they are aware of the risks involved and also receive the appropriate safety training for constructions workers.

Here are a few statistics of the workplace fatality from 2012. As per the statistics that were made public in 2012 approximately 4000 workers were fatally injured at their workplace. This statistic is not meant to scare away any new constructions workers, but it is definitely a fact that you should be aware off. It is also important to note that the rules and regulations have become more strict now and the safety of the construction workers is given more importance.

Safety tips for construction workers:

  • The dangers that exist: As a construction worker you are entitled to be educated regarding the hazards at our workplace. The only way a construction workers safety can be ensured is if they are aware of all the potential hazards and risky situations. There is a general list of precautions that can be taken by each construction worker however each construction site is different and have their own list of hazards which you need to be aware off. Some of the common risks include exposure to chemicals, risks at high places, working with dangerous equipment, etc.
  • Few other common hazards: Once you enter the workplace a trained eye will immediately spot the obvious workplace hazards. Even if you are new to the construction field it is likely that you too will spot them. The obvious hazards include falling from heights, unguarded machinery, etc. However not all the hazards are apparent and immediately detectable and you often only spot them later on. Such hazards include repeated exposures to very high noise levels, even exposure to radiation, dust and chemicals.
  • The job safety training: In an ideal world an employer should always make sure that the construction worker possess all the necessary skills required to do the job in a safe and correct manner. In addition to which the employer should ideally also arrange an enrolment program which includes basic training and information about the more specific issues pertaining to the workplace. However there is every possibility that some employees don’t do that hence there are now occupational health and safety regulations that require an employer to make sure the worker possess the necessary skills. Additionally, the employer should also assign direct supervision for those employees with very little to no experience.
  • Safety for construction worker: Besides the supervision and some training provided by the company the inexperienced construction worker needs to be alert and follow safe practices as well. For example if you are unloading hazardous chemicals and the supervisor is called off for some reason, you should wait till he gets back and carry out the job only under his supervision. It may seem easy to finish the job at hand on your own but the supervisor has been assigned for a very good reason and boundaries should never be crossed. In general every task has a proper method and procedure which must be followed. For example if the task is to work with hazardous chemicals, it is necessary for you to have first undergone the Workplace Hazardous Material Information System training (WHMIS).
  • Safety meetings: Safety meetings are very beneficial and it also shows that the employer is committed towards the safety of the workers. That said, there are no rules or regulations that state that it is necessary to conduct safety meetings on a regular basis.
  • Safety gear: The importance of making use of safety gear cannot be stressed enough. It is vital that you always wear the necessary safety gear that is demanded by the task. For example, in general while working on a construction site it is usually compulsory to have strong head gear on in the form of a hard hat. The employer is legally required to provide the necessary safety equipment required for special tasks carried out on the construction site. In addition to that the employer is also entitled to train the worker on how to use the safety equipment. For example the employer is required to provide respiratory protective equipment if and when there is a breathing hazard. On the other hand the employer may not be required to provide the basic safety equipment like safety boots, hard hats, protective eyewear and ear wear and fire resistant clothing. These are a few things that the worker should have enough knowledge to always carry with him. Though it is the duty of the employer to enforce the rule for the workers to always be in their protective and safe attire.
  • Emergency procedures: Every employer is legally required to train their workers and provide the information on all the emergency procedures. There could be a number of different procedures for the many different tasks at hand. However in the case where the worker is in constant supervision of highly trained employee, exceptions are made.
  • In case of an accident: The first step to take in case of an incident at the workplace is to report it. The employer is legally required to maintain first aid supplies along with trained personnel on how to administer first aid. Hence the worker will most certainly receive immediate assistance via the first aid kit available for every situation. If the incident is more serious, it is necessary to consult a professional doctor at the earliest.
  • The health and safety responsibilities of a worker: Each worker is responsible for their own safety and the safety of their fellow workers. Thus as an worker you should never engage in a task that is likely to bring harm to either yourself or a fellow employee. The task should also be refused if the worker feels he has insufficient training.
  • Making health and safety inquires: A workplace such as a construction site will usually always have experience supervisors who have all the answers and safety information. Hence in case of any health and safety quires, the first person to contact would be your supervisor. But every worker should know that they have every right to contact the Workplace health and safety call centre who are just a call away at the toll free number 1-866-415-8690. At times in more serious situations an occupational health and safety official will be more than happy to pay you a visit at your workplace to ensure the safety of everyone involved is at highest level.

Occupational Health and Safety – The Facts

Occupational Health and Safety Background Information:

Occupational Health and Safety

All the work places under the inspection jurisdiction of the WCB are legally required to meet with the OHS Regulations set out. Thus the only workplaces except are the mines and the ones federally chartered like the banks, inter provincial and international transportation, telephone systems as well as radio, television and cable services. The main purpose of such OHS Regulations is for the well being of the citizens. It makes sure that every step is taken to promote health and safety (as well as protect workers and other people) at workplaces from work related risks to their lives. It is only if the workers and employers cooperate and follow the requirements set out that these health and safety issues can be correctly dealt with.

Furthermore the board is in a constant process of reviewing the requirements of the OHS regulations. They also tend to incorporate change in technology and new findings at the work place within the regulations to make the workplace all the more safer.

Regulatory Requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Awareness and Training Regulation:

The Occupational Health and Safety Training are all set to change starting July 1st 2014. As per their new regulations there several issues that the employers, workers and supervisors should be aware off as mentioned below:
